Merrill Auditorium
This early 1900’s concert hall is home to the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and Portland Concert Association. The building also houses the Kotchmar Organ, which at the time of its construction was the largest pipe organ in the country. The existing building suffered from poor acoustics and site lines, outdated and non- functioning building systems, inadequate public amenities and a lack of stage house and back stage facilities. Through major renovations and additions, this dilapidated structure has been transformed into a first class multi-use theater and concert hall.
Renovations included re-terracing of the balconies for improved site lines, reshaping the walls and ceilings within the auditorium, the addition of a portable shell on stage for improved acoustics, and the expansion of the stage to create a stage house with wing space and an orchestra pit. In addition, restrooms, ticketing, and concessions areas were upgraded, and mechanical and electrical systems totally replaced. A new addition at the rear of the historic building houses a rehearsal hall, dressing rooms, Green Room, and a musician’s lounge.
The project received an Award for Excellence in Design from the Maine chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
