About Us

Established in 1975, Winton Scott Architects is a small, design-oriented architectural practice located in Portland, Maine. Our work encompasses a diverse array of project types and scales ranging from multi-block urban developments, to historic renovations, commercial and institutional buildings, and multifamily and single family residences. Our firm has been recognized numerous times for design excellence by the Maine and New England Chapters of the American Institute of Architects, as well as the United States Green Building Council; and our work has been profiled in national trade journals, local publications, and several books focussed on design and architecture.

Winton Scott Architects is currently comprised of four equal owners/partners that have worked together successfully for the majority of our careers. We are all fully engaged in all aspects of the practice of architecture from design through document production, permitting, and construction administration. This depth of experience and continuity allows WSA to take on projects large and small while consistently delivering the highest level of professional services to our clients. The culture of the office is that of an open, creative collaboration of seasoned architects striving for the highest level of design excellence and client satisfaction.

We believe that architecture should be sustainable, adaptable, timeless, and derivative of its context and function. All buildings, even the most modest in scale and budget, can be at once artful, functional, and inspiring if they are rigorously conceived and thoughtfully executed. Each of our designs responds to the specific needs of our clients and the individual character of a particular site and its surrounding context.
