Ocean Gateway Cruise Ship Terminal
The Ocean Gateway Terminal was one of the first major projects that began the revitalization of Portland’s Eastern Waterfront which had long been an under-utilized and disconnected segment of an otherwise vibrant port area. The facility was built to serve vessels providing ferry service to the Canadian Maritimes while also providing berth space for the expanding cruise ship operations in the city.
Facilities include a 5,00 square foot land based ticketing and information center and a 15,000 square foot terminal building extending out into the harbor. The design draws from the clean, utilitarian forms of turn-of- the century industrial structures that once occupied the area in support of shipping activities. As an important new gateway to the city from the water, the buildings attempt to convey a modern exuberance reflecting the current vitality of the City while remaining connected to its rich maritime heritage.
